10 Fascinating Blue Tit Facts
Blue tits are remarkable little birds! Here are 10 fascinating facts we’ve learned while watching our nesting female.
1. Tiny but Mighty
Blue tits weigh just 11 grams on average - about the same as two teaspoons of sugar! Despite their small size, they’re incredibly energetic and acrobatic.
2. Cavity Nesters
Blue tits naturally nest in tree holes, but they readily adapt to nest boxes like ours. The female selects the nest site and does most of the construction work.
3. Moss Masters
A blue tit nest is built primarily from moss, with a cosy lining of hair, wool, and feathers. Our female made hundreds of trips gathering materials!
4. Large Families
Blue tits typically lay 7-13 eggs per clutch. That’s a lot of mouths to feed!
5. Synchronised Hatching
Blue tits synchronise their egg laying with the peak caterpillar season in spring, ensuring plenty of food when chicks hatch.
6. Caterpillar Connoisseurs
A pair of blue tits can bring over 1,000 caterpillars per day to their hungry chicks!
7. Acrobatic Feeders
Blue tits can hang upside down while feeding - a skill that helps them access food other birds can’t reach.
8. Colour Vision
Blue tits can see ultraviolet light, meaning they see colors we can’t even imagine. The “blue” on their heads appears even more vibrant to other blue tits!
9. Loyal Partners
Many blue tit pairs stay together for multiple breeding seasons, though they don’t necessarily remain together outside the breeding period.
10. Garden Champions
Blue tits are excellent pest controllers, consuming vast quantities of aphids, caterpillars, and other garden insects.
